Meadow Arts and the University of Worcester’s Fine Art department, Garage Studios, are delighted to continue their successful series of artists’ talks for the third year in a row. Some of the most exciting contemporary artists working in the UK will be visiting Worcester’s state-of-the-art library, The Hive, to talk about their artwork, ideas and the processes they use in a series of eight free talks.

This year’s talks take place across two terms, starting with four talks in November and December and a further four beginning in February.

Talks take place on selected Wednesday evenings from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, and include a chance to ask questions after each presentation. The talks are free and open to all, though booking is recommended for the public.

Emily Speed

Emily Speed's interests lie in the relationship between people and buildings and her work explores the body and its relationship to architecture. Speed says, "The idea of shelter and the inhabitant is at the core of much of my work; how a person is shaped by the buildings they have occupied and how a person occupies their own psychological space."

Emily Speed studied BA (Hons) Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art (1997 – 2001) before completing an MA in Fine Art: Drawing at University of the Arts London: Wimbledon College of Art (2005-2006). In 2013 she exhibited at Castlefield Gallery in Manchester alongside Hayley Newman and was shortlisted for the Northern Art Prize. Then in October 2014, Speed was resident at the British School at Rome as the Derek Hill Foundation Scholar (drawing). In 2016 she had solo exhibitions at TRUCK, Calgary and presented a major new commission at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, Texas. Recent exhibitions include Plymouth Art Centre, Oredaria Gallery, Rome; Laumeier Sculpture Park, St Louis, USA; Danielle Arnaud Gallery, London; Bluecoat, Liverpool; Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland.


Chris Fite-Wassilak

Chris Fite-Wassilak is a writer and critic based in London; a regular contributor to Apollo, Art Monthly, Art Papers, ArtReview and frieze, and the co-organiser of the quarterly event hmn with artist Anne Tallentire. In 2009 he curated ‘Quiet Revolution’ through the inaugural Hayward Touring Curatorial Open, which toured between Milton Keynes Gallery, Djanogly Gallery (Nottingham) and the Harris Museum (Preston). His short book of essays Ha-Ha Crystal was recently published by Copy Press.


Mark Titchner

Mark Titchner (b.1973 Luton, UK) lives and works in London. He studied at Hertfordshire College of Art & Design (1992) and Central St Martins College of Art & Design (1995).

He works with a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, video, music, sound, performance, murals and large-scale print. Focusing on an exploration of words and language, in recent years much of his production has been based in the public realm.

His practice explores systems of belief, both secular and spiritual, often focusing on the marginalised, discredited or forgotten ideologies and objects we place our faith in. By the use of impersonal language of the public realm, ranging from the corporate mission statements to the maxims of revolutionary socialism, his work exhorts the viewer to believe in it.

In 2006, Mark Titchner was nominated for the Turner prize and his work was showcased in the 2007 Venice Biennale at the Ukraine Pavilion.

Solo exhibitions include ‘Mark Titchner’, CGP/Dilston Grove, London (2014), ’Please Believe These Days Will Pass’, The Young gallery at The Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada (2012), ‘Be true to your oblivion’, New Art Gallery, Walsall (2011), The Age of Happiness, Hellenic American Union, Athens (2009) and ‘Run Black River, Run’, BALTIC, Gateshead, (2008). Current projects include working as Lead Artist for “As you change so do I”, an evolving three year public art project based in the artist’s home town of Luton and ‘What I want more than anything else’ a public art project working with young people in the towns of Hull, Wigan and Burnley.


Stephen Chambers POSTPONED until early 2018!

Stephen Chambers is a British artist and Royal Academician. He studied at Winchester School of Art from 1978 to 1979 and at Saint Martin's School of Art, from 1979 to 1982. In 1983, he received a master's degree from Chelsea School of Art. He has won many scholarships and awards, including a Rome Scholarship, a Fellowship at Winchester School of Art, and a Mark Rothko Memorial Trust Travelling Award. From 1998 to 1999, Chambers was the Kettle’s Yard/Downing College Cambridge Fellow and in 2016, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Downing College in the University of Cambridge.

Stephen Chambers has exhibited widely, with more than 40 solo presentations, including The Big Country at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2012, and at the Pera Museum, Istanbul, in 2014. Most recently his exhibition ‘The Court of Redonda’ was an official collateral event of the 57th Venice Biennale. His work is held in many international collections including Arts Council England; Deutsche Bank, London; Downing College, University of Cambridge; Government Art Collection, London; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Pera Museum, Istanbul, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He has collaborated with Ashley Page and Orlando Gough on three contemporary dance productions for The Royal Ballet, London: ‘Sleeping with Audrey’ (1996), ‘Room of Cooks’ (1997/1999), and ‘This House Will Burn’ (2001).


David Bethell

David Bethell is a UK artist based in Leek, Staffordshire Moorlands and London.

Bethell's work is inspired by landscape and the natural environment, often looking at the contrasts and conflicts of human influences on landscape. His work also looks into our aspirations, desires, and our failure to achieve these unattainable dreams.

He uses a range of media from performance, installation, objects and animation.

Marianna Simnett

Marianna Simnett completed her BA at Nottingham Trent University in 2007 and her MA at the Slade School of Art in 2013. Working with video and drawing, her recent body of work explores themes of sexuality, innocence, corruption and martyrdom. Her videos involve collaborative processes with non-actors playing the part of themselves in heightened, suspended realities.


Helen Maurer

Helen Maurer works with glass, light, projection and sound to create installations. Interested in illusion, stability, scale and finding ways to get something large from the smallest source, there is often both a 2 and 3-dimensional element to the work within the same piece. Maurer often uses found objects from visits to charity shops, collecting old furniture, objects and glassware.

Maurer originally studied Fine Art and Theatre before specialising in glass, with an MA from the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited internationally and often collaborates with other artists, choreographers and musicians.

Represented by Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art in London.


Jasleen Kaur

Jasleen Kaur is a Scottish Indian artist based in London. Brought up in a traditional Sikh household in Glasgow, her work is an ongoing exploration into the malleability of culture and the layering of social histories within materials and objects. Refashioned objects are often based on instinct and resourcefulness, reflecting a hybridity of national custom and reconsidering the realities of materiality, usage and everyday routine.

Jasleen works across the UK and internationally with recent commissions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Goethe Institute, Baltic 39 Figure Three and Art on the Underground. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Royal College of Art and Crafts Council.

About The Garage Studios

The Garage Studios is the purpose built studios for the University of Worcester’s Fine Art and Art & Design Departments. The courses combine visual art’s practice with critical studies and place a strong emphasis on studio practice within a field of various disciplines including, painting, sculpture, time based and digital practices. The courses are led by a growing team of practitioners who are engaged in the development of world-leading research and meaningful collaborations with industry, public sector and community organisations.

The Fabrication Research Group originates from the Department of Fine Art at the University of Worcester to explore questions and ideas relating to practices and processes of fabrication. The group brings together artists, academics, designers, material scientists, digital theorists, engineers, architects, and craftsmen to develop questions about the nature of fabrication in an attempt to establish connections between the making of material things and the social, cultural, political, economic and environmental ecologies in which they are implicated.
