Sun Stands Still

24th November 2020

A callout for rural sunrise pictures and video

For this year’s Winter Solstice, Meadow Arts has commissioned two artists who are part of its team to make a short video work, called Sun Stands Still, that celebrates dawn in the rural landscape: we're inviting people who live rurally and on farms to get involved.

It’s part of a regional project called It Gets Lighter From Here that will see hundreds of arts organisations release video clips of up to 60 seconds long, to bring some hope and optimism to the darkest day of the year. Artists Rebecca Farkas and Leanne O’Connor are keen to see people in the rural counties where Meadow Arts creates projects (primarily Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire) included.

Rebecca explains, “We’d love it if farmers, and others who are out and about in rural areas when the sun comes up, could send us a 5-second video or a photo of a sunrise that we can put into the film. We’re aiming to incorporate as many of the sun rises as we can, to make something that represents the people and places of the more rural West Midlands areas.”

Leanne continues, “Farmers and agricultural workers can sometimes navigate being simultaneously visible and invisible, with their labour impacting our everyday lives - but in a way we aren't constantly conscious of. The idea of asking those who are up for a rural sunrise, came from wanting to shine a light onto rural lives and reinterpret the sunrise as an emblem of hope. We can’t wait to receive these submissions so we can get to work on creating something that will light up everyone's individual worlds on the 21st December.”

To take part, please email images@meadowarts.org with a photograph, or up to five seconds of video, of a sunrise in a landscape format (i.e. the longest side of the image is the horizontal side), along with your name and where you captured the image. You can also tag @meadowarts #maruralsunrise on social media. The deadline to send in your submission is midnight on Friday 4 December.
