Through simple phrases, Etchells creates miniature narratives - moments of confusion, awkwardness, reflection and intimacy. Encountering the works, the viewer becomes implicated in a situation that isn’t fully revealed. As often occurs in Etchells’ work, the missing parts are as important as the elements that are present. Invoking a story, or projecting an idea out-of-context, the work invites us in, but in to what exactly, we cannot be sure.

Everything Is Lost is a set of metal letters held on tensioned steel wires, distributed irregularly, so that the simple phrase appears in direct relation to the surrounding, now bare, architecture of Witley Court.

Standing like a totem, or a warning, in the huge empty courtyard, the work hints at loss and absence. But this is immediately contradicted by the formidable presence of the stone mansion, the promise of the elaborate gardens and fountain beyond. What has been lost, really?

If everything is lost, what is this thing we are left with? Ruins are what we are left with when everything is lost, but this is far from nothing.
