A de Stjil stile

A de Stjil stile

Danish-born but Glasgow-based Susanne Nielsen often explores juxtapositions of the aesthetic styles. Her interest in early abstract art, and particularly the De Stjil movement and the works of Mondrian as a now classical aesthetic tradition, has informed her work for Picture This. Nielsen built and installed a wooden stile at the intersection between the tall grassland and the wildflower meadow. Its structure reflects the proportions and forms characteristic of De Stijl aesthetics and it is painted in ways that make direct reference to works of that period, notably of Mondrian’s abstract compositions. The sculpture/stile also refers to the evolution of Mondrian’s vision “of the totality of nature expressed by the intersection of two lines” which led him straight from masterful landscape painting to the most radical abstract compositions. It is in this new picturesque framework for the 21st century and beyond that Nielsen sets her work.
