Dead Bonsai, silk thread

The branches and trunk of this bonsaï have been painstakingly covered in silk embroidery thread in a process that breathes new life into the dead miniature tree. For the artist the painstaking and lengthy process of wrapping the small bonsaï in silk thread is a meditative act. By being bound in precious silk thread the discarded object becomes an icon in itself as it is re-presented and re-born.

This artwork is being shown in the beautiful Norman church of Saint Peter’s in the centre of the city of Hereford, until 27th November 2010 for the duration of the Hereford Photography Festival.

Philippa Lawrence

Philippa Lawrence sees her work as an attempt to assuage some of the feeling of separateness that is part of the human condition. Through her work she sifts and sorts the world and its ‘stuff’, trying to distill a thought or a recognition into a piece that can engage people long enough to make their own associations.

Work ranges from the monumental to the minute, bringing objects and materials together to draw out new possibilities. Whether the work is intimate or large scale, Philippa employs similar repetitive actions to realise it.

Philippa Lawrence is based in Bristol and her work has been exhibited internationally, including shows in Japan, America, Iceland and the Czech Republic. She has had a solo show at Oriel Davies and a major commission for Arts Council Wales.
