Based in Stourbridge (West Midlands), Marie Roberts has in the past used digital imaging, printing, carving, cast iron work, glass, video and body casting. Through her recent explorations of corporeality and religiosity, she creates work that ‘simultaneously provokes, arouses and repels”.
For ‘Fold’, constructed for Picture This Roberts worked with reclaimed local stone to create a traditional sheep fold in which resin-cast gilded lambs hearts nestle into the cracks and crevices of the dry stone walls. Echoing the ideas on the Sublime fostered by William Gilpin who awakened the British tourists in the rugged delights of certain wild landscapes once thought to be ugly, Roberts presented the audience with a sculpture that drew on the collision between attraction and repulsion, beauty and danger. Her response directly addressed the recent foot and mouth outbreak and its horrific repercussions, which have changed our landscape and the lives of our farming communities.
