Clare Woods - The Bishops

Enamel on aluminium Meadow Gallery commission, 2009

Night Time Jam

Like the larger 'conversation piece' in the house (The Bishops), these small oil paintings on wood are based on photographs of veteran trees in the park. Clare Woods refers again to the tradition of family portraiture, in this case, the more intimate miniatures, and the wish to memorialise and honour worthy ancestors.

Clare Woods

Clare Woods' works explore what she sees as supernatural elements of the landscape, hovering between representation and abstraction, offering endless possible readings. They are familiar landscapes exploring the undergrowth and yet somehow uncanny, creating an ambiguous and unstable white noise - just like nature.

Clare Woods lives and works in London and Herefordshire. She studied at Bath College of Art and Goldsmiths College. She has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and America and her work is represented in major collections. She recently had solo exhibitions in London, Athens, Madrid, Berlin and at the award winning Hepworth Wakefield gallery.

In 2010 Clare Woods was made a fellow of Hereford College of Arts. In 2011 Woods completed a mural for Hampstead Heath Tube Station and in 2012 she undertook a commission for the London Olympic Park.
