Saturday 10 Octobre, at Croft Castle (National Trust), Herefordshire

The Big Draw: the big tree

Lead by artist Kate Raggett

P1010743

Sunny weather allowed a great day in the grounds of Croft Castle near Leominster making a large community drawing as part of the Big Draw event 2009. Over 150 children and adults arrived to try their hand at drawing large-scale with natural materials found in the grounds of the Castle.

The result, a 100 x 100ft tree made from leaves, straw, wood, fallen flower blossoms and windfall apples at the base of a large and very old Spanish Sweet Chestnut tree.

The drawing was aerially photographed and the detail shots show the beautiful creative contributions by many of the children and their families- birds, animals and figures were drawn into sections of the tree (and also a swing - with some live participants! on the lowest branch on the left...).

Others used the materials to make beautiful patterns and textures. It was a great event with adults and children all working together throughout the day to create this large drawing.

Thanks to Kate Raggett for this inspirational day, to all the children and families who conributed,. Herefordshire Council for funding the event and to everyone at Croft for their help and for welcoming the drawing to the land.
